Flavio Poli was born in Venice, Italy in 1900 and trained at the Istituto d'Arte di Venezia, first working as a ceramicist. In 1929 he joined Industrie Vetraie Artistiche Murano, taking his first foray into designing glassware. He swiftly gained recognition, and took a position as artistic director of Barovier, Seguso & Ferro (later Seguso Vetri d’Arte) in 1934, where he invented a style of “submerged” glass with several transparent layers, one over the other. After three years he became a partner in the company, and received one of the inaugural Compasso d’Oro awards in 1954. He left Seguso in 1963 to lead the artistic glass division of the Società Veneziana di Conterie e Cristallerie, but left after three years due to deteriorating health. He died in 1984, remembered as one of the great innovators of Italian art glass in the 20th Century, with pieces in the Murano Glass Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Corning Museum of Glass, and the Metropolitan Museum and Museum of Modern Art in New York.
