This exceptional silver pitcher is embellished with applied trailing vines and finely detailed representations of a grasshopper, dragonfly, and butterflies rendered in silver, copper, and brass. It is further accented by two mokume gourds, a motif deeply rooted in Asian symbolism. Across many Asian cultures, the gourd represents fertility, longevity, and good fortune. In Taoist tradition, it is especially significant as the attribute of one of the Eight Immortals, who carries a gourd filled with medicine or water to bring relief to the poor and the sick.

The handle is modeled after the ruyi scepter, a traditional Chinese ceremonial object distinguished by its graceful curved form. Revered in both Chinese Buddhist and secular traditions, the ruyi serves as a symbol of authority, prosperity, and the fulfillment of wishes. Its name, which translates to “as you wish,” underscores its longstanding role as a meaningful gift bestowed to convey blessings, success, and good fortune.
