Extraordinary 17th Century Italian 6 1/2 Foot Tall Carved and Painted Jesus Statue. Tracing its origins back to a monastery in the Venetian Republic state in the 1600s, the figure displays the son of god in the "Corpus Christi" (Crucified Christ) pose, carved from olive wood with remnants of polychrome paint and comprised of separately joined arms pinned or socketed into the torso. The elongated proportions (making it over six feet wide from hand to hand), gaunt and taut musculature, pulled arm sockets, and barely open eyes are characteristic of Late Medieval and Early Renaissance devotional sculpture, and the holes in the feet, hands, and chest indicate where it would've been mounted to a cross looming over the congregation. A miraculously surviving blood-form paint spot where the spear of Longinus pierced his side and hints of color remain around the broken crown of thorns. This truly amazing work of religious art has survived countless wars, border shifts, and diasporas, and is older than the country in which it is currently being auctioned!
