Eva Striker Zeisel (1906–2011) was a Hungarian-born American industrial designer whose prolific career in ceramics—and other media—spanned more than nine decades. A painter-turned-potter, she became the first woman journeyman in Budapest’s medieval pottery guild and went on to design in Germany, the Soviet Union (where she served as artistic director before spending 16 months in prison under Stalin’s purges), and eventually the United States after emigrating in 1938. In New York, she taught industrial ceramic design at Pratt Institute and earned her reputation through iconic works such as the playful, biomorphic Town and Country line for Red Wing and the elegant all‑white Museum dinner service created for MoMA and Castleton China—leading to the first solo exhibition by a woman at the Museum of Modern Art in 1946. Zeisel’s organic, tactile forms—often inspired by human and natural curves—were mass‑produced but always crafted to be touched and enjoyed in everyday life; she called herself a “maker of useful things,” favoring gentle modernism over machine‑age austerity. Her designs are held in major museum collections worldwide, and in 2005 she received the Cooper‑Hewitt National Design Award for Lifetime Achievement, affirming her lasting influence on mid‑century and contemporary design.
