​Eva Carter, born in 1941 in Tennessee, is a distinguished American abstract painter celebrated for her large-scale oil paintings that exude vibrant color, dynamic movement, and emotional depth. Educated at East Tennessee State University, she relocated to South Carolina in 1977, where the coastal landscapes and natural surroundings profoundly influenced her artistic vision. Carter's work is characterized by bold brushstrokes and an intuitive process, often drawing inspiration from Abstract Expressionist masters like Richard Diebenkorn, Willem de Kooning, and Franz Kline. Her paintings are featured in the permanent collections of institutions such as the Gibbes Museum of Art, the Franklin G. Burroughs-Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum, and the Reece Museum at East Tennessee State University. After closing her Charleston gallery in 2009, she continued to create from her studio on Wadmalaw Island, embracing the natural beauty of the Lowcountry as a continual source of inspiration.
