Born in Sollentuna, Sweden in 1938, Bertil Vallien studied sculpture at Konstfack and the University of Southern California before beginning a legendary 50-year career as a primary designer for Kosta Boda Glassworks. He pioneered groundbreaking glass-casting techniques—most notably sand casting—creating haunting, narrative-driven sculptures, boats, and heads that redefined modern studio glass. Awarded an honorary doctorate in 1988, Vallien retired from active glassmaking following the passing of his artist wife, Ulrica Hydman Vallien, in 2018, leaving his works in major museum collections worldwide.
