Urban skyline with bridge above, oil on canvas board, signed and inscribed with dedication in lower right: "To Dr. Nielsen who built my wife’s bridge". Eric Sloane was an American painter best known for his airy, idyllic landscapes inspired by the work of Hudson River School artists. Many of his later works focus on New England folk culture and aspects of colonial life, and often feature imagery and architecture that is endemic to the region such as stone barns, covered bridges, and rocky mountainscapes. He painted in a realistic style with a warm palette, choosing to include a high level of observed detail. Born Everard Jean Hinrichs on February 27, 1905 in New York, NY, Sloane became interested in art after working in typography and sign painting. The artist received formal training from the Art Students League of New York and assumed the alias Eric Sloane to disassociate himself from his earlier, less successful work. Sloane is generally accepted as an artistic genius. Over his lifetime, he wrote thirty eight books. It is estimated that he created nearly 15,000 paintings, mostly oil on masonite. He painted one almost every day, often before lunch, striving to do better than the day before. Later in his life, he bought back or traded for some of his earlier work, which he destroyed by fire, contending it was inferior. Provenance: Kellogg Mansion, Dunedin, Florida. Built in 1925. Overall size: 22 x 20 1/2 in. Sight size: 19 x 17 1/2 in. Please contact Nic at Info@premiershipment.com for an estimated shipping quote prior to bidding.
