Eric Freifeld (1919-1984) was a Russian-born Canadian painter, draughtsman, and influential art educator who emigrated to Edmonton as a child and later made Toronto his home. He taught at the Ontario College of Art from 1946 until 1980, eventually serving as chair of its fine-arts department, and became known for his rigorous draftsmanship and expressive realism. Working primarily in Conté crayon, pencil, charcoal, and watercolor, Freifeld produced cityscapes, landscapes, nudes, and socially engaged scenes marked by technical precision and emotional weight. His works—often balancing realism with subtle expressionist or fauvist undertones—are represented in major Canadian collections, including the National Gallery of Canada.
