English Royal Doulton Dickens Ware Decorative Ceramic Spittoon.
The upper part is a vibrant green (presumably to make it easier to spot in a dark pub), with an extremely wide rounded lip. The bottom part has a rounded top and bottom with a straight edge, and is covered in images of people from Dicken's literary oeuvre: the evil Bill Sykes and his dog, the corpulent Tony Weller with his whip, the optimistic but foolhardy Wilkins Micawber, and the heroic Sam Weller, Tony's much more intelligent cockney son. Marked on the underside.
Condition: Commensurate with use.
Size: 7 3/4 x 7 in.
Royal Doulton originated in 1815 as a partnership at an earthenware factory in Lambeth, London, initially specializing in utilitarian salt glaze stoneware. The company took the name Doulton & Co. in 1854 and dramatically expanded its production, opening a factory in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, in 1882 to begin manufacturing bone china tableware. After receiving a royal warrant in 1901, it became known as Royal Doulton and, despite multiple corporate mergers and eventually being acquired by the Finnish company Fiskars in 2015, the brand continues to produce tableware, figurines, and home accessories today.
