The practice of painting on copper was widespread in Europe in the 16th and 17th Centuries. It arose from a desire to experiment with painting on new kinds of smooth surfaces. Leonardo da Vinci, Jan Brueghel, El Greco and many others attempted this at one time or another, and northern European artists, especially in The Netherlands and Germany, produced the bulk of these works. By 1650 the popularity of copper supports for oil painting began to wane, until finally in the eighteenth century copper plates were seldom used for painting. However, copper plates were sometimes used to make prints, and since copper is one of the most malleable metals and pigment bonds to it extremely well there are still artists working with it today. Even pieces painted hundreds of years ago survive extremely well due to protection against oxidation and from the elements afforded by enamel paints. This piece is a stunning view of Mount Fuji rising majestically above the clouds, likely created in the 20th or 21st Century due to the visual style, clarity, and quality of the material.
