Located in the beautiful artist’s colony of Carmel, California, Zantman Art Galleries is one of the oldest continually operating art galleries in America. The commercial gallery began when a Dutch couple, Johan and Gertrude Zantman, moved to the community in 1959. Both were born in Holland, but met and were married in Indonesia, where Johan was a film distributor for theaters throughout the region. After immigrating to the East Coast of the United States in 1958, they discovered Carmel and the countless artists who had made it their home, and decided to create a business to give them representation. Zantman’s stressed integrity in identifying real works, as well as seeking the highest quality from local artists above those from outside the region. Tens of thousands of people visit the gallery every year, with many adding the works they show at their dozens of exhibitions to their private collections, year after year.
