Emile Albert Gruppe (1896- 978) American - Massachusetts artist, signed lower left, oil on canvas. Titled: "Wanderbird" verso. Original label: Gloucester dock scene with the white-hulled Schooner Wanderbird and men working. Emile Albert Gruppe was born in Rochester, New York, and educated in art at The Hague in the Netherlands and New York City. In 1942, he founded the Gruppe Summer School in Gloucester, Massachusetts, and made his permanent studio there. A prolific artist and an influential teacher, Emile Gruppe enjoyed a long and successful career that spanned over six decades.
