Emile Albert Gruppe was born in Rochester, New York, and educated in art at The Hague in the Netherlands and New York City. In 1942, he founded the Gruppe Summer School in Gloucester, Massachusetts, and made his permanent studio there. A prolific artist and an influential teacher, Emile Gruppe enjoyed a long and successful career that spanned over six decades. He is best known for his Impressionistic portrayals of the harbors and houses of Gloucester and the rural scenery of Vermont.
