Emil Rizek (1901-1988) California, Gouache on Paper. Marked "LOUNGE" on the back. Depicts Chinatown, San Francisco. Overall size: 36 3/4 X 30 3/4 in. Sight size: 28 1/4 X 22 in. #1496 . Born in Austria in 1901, Emil Rizek took private art lessons with Anton Hlavatschek at the Vinennese Academy. Inspired by Dutch Impressionists and an obsession with traveling, his style of realism was often figurative, portraying laborers and working class people. Devastated by the negative effect of fascism on the Vienna Artist's Cooperative, he was forced to serve in the Wehrmacht as a war artist until being captured in Finland. He resumed painting later in life, trying to recapture the excitement he had once seen in ports from Bali to San Francisco to Copenhagen. His vigorous Expressionist style and penchant for the hustle and bustle of cities is evident in this piece, which he likely painted while teaching at the College of Arts & Crafts in Oakland in 1938. It originally hung in the First Class lounge of an American President Lines (APL) Passenger Liner. Location BC
