Elmo Gideon (1924–2010) was a prolific American painter and sculptor whose dynamic career spanned abstract, impressionistic, and modernist styles. Raised during the Great Depression, he began making paintbrushes from twigs and rags before receiving formal training at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts and brief study at Miami’s Terry Art School following his military service. Settling in South Florida, Gideon became one of the region's most productive artists, formulating his own paints and sculpting compounds to generate tens of thousands of original works—including major commercial commissions for landmark hotels like the Fontainebleau, as well as deeply personal projects such as his famous Holocaust Collection. Signed simply as "Gideon," his vast output, technical innovation, and civic contributions culminated in Miami-Dade County officially proclaiming April 12, 2001, as "Elmo Gideon Day".
