Original broadside about picking electors for the Presidential election in 1812. A rare historical document. This was only the seventh Presidential election in U.S. history. Each state had different ways of picking their electors (representatives for the electoral college); in Massachusetts, two electors were chosen by voters statewide and one elector per congressional district was picked by the voters. Massachusetts had 29 electors altogether, and they voted for Dewitt Clinton. This was taking place in the shadow of the War of 1812, and was the first Presidential election to be held during a major war involving the United States. James Madison won the election. The Library of Congress has a copy of the broadside. The overall size is 13 1/2 x 8 11/16 in. and the sight size is 12 3/8 x 7 5/8 in., and the document is in very fine condition.
