The Edwards & Deutsch Lithographing Company was established in Chicago, Illinois in 1908 by the illustrator Joseph Deutsch and Charles Edwards, his secretary. Deutsch had been director of the Western Lithographers Association since 1897, as well as director of the National Lithographers Association since 1906, and was instrumental in establishing the Lithographic Technical Foundation at the University of Cincinnati. The company produced thousands of lithographic prints during its existence, particularly World War I propaganda pieces and anti-tuberculosis campaigns. As a 32nd Degree Freemason he provided work to hundreds of Masonic artists and designers in the Midwest and helped them find work in other states once they had been published by his company. He was also a firm supporter of the Republican Party, with Edwards & Deutsch producing nearly 30% of all the pro-William Taft political artwork during his campaign. By the 1920s they had expanded to add a second branch in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, but when the Great Depression hit work dwindled drastically. A series of copyright infringement lawsuits filed by and against them further damaged the company, and in 1932 Deutsch died unexpectedly of acute indigestion. The company was taken over by Chester Fairbanks for two years, but ultimately closed in 1934.
