Eduardo Chillida (1924–2002) was a renowned Spanish sculptor celebrated for his monumental abstract works in iron, steel, stone, and concrete. Born in San Sebastián in the Basque Country, Chillida initially studied architecture before turning to sculpture in the 1940s. Deeply influenced by his Basque heritage, his work explores space, weight, and the tension between mass and void, often creating a dynamic interplay between heavy materials and open forms. His sculptures, which range from small-scale studies to massive public installations, have been exhibited internationally and placed in prominent locations across Europe and the United States. Chillida’s artistic philosophy was informed by poetry, philosophy, and mathematics, and he collaborated with thinkers like Martin Heidegger. Today, his legacy is preserved through the Chillida-Leku Museum near San Sebastián, a space he helped design to integrate his sculptures with the natural landscape.
