Edmund Blampied (1886-1966) British, Signed and Numbered Drypoint Etching. Title: "Madame Dupré." The artwork was created in 1929 using the etching and drypoint technique, depicting an old peasant woman peeling vegetables next to a large pot, a subject the artist returned to frequently during her lifetime. Signed in pencil bottom right. Numbered 92/100 in pencil bottom left.

Overall Size: 20 x 15 3/4 in.

Sight Size: 9 1/2 x 7 1/2 in.

Edmund Blampied was born on March 30, 1886 in Jersey and displayed a natural talent for drawing and caricatures that led to early encouragement by Mlle Marie Josephine Klintz and sponsorship for formal education at the Jersey School of Art, studying etching, lithography, and illustration. His skills were further honed at the Lambeth School of Art in London, where he studied under Philip Connard and William Lee-Hankey, and after a brief period at the Bolt Court London County Council School of Photo-engraving and Lithography and working for The Daily Chronicle he began an independent career, displaying a polymathic skillset. His humorist and realistic works were published in Pearson’s Magazine, The Sketch, The Tatler, and numerous others, and his first solo exhibition was at the Leicester Galleries in 1920, with an exhibition in the United States following two years later and a gold medal at the 1925 Paris Exposition solidifying his reputation. Tragically, the occupation of the Channel Islands by the Nazis left him and his Jewish wife trapped on Jersey for five years, a traumatic event from which his career and personality never fully recovered, and he died on August 26th, 1966 having mostly shifted to watercolor and oil paintings in his final decades.
