Artist Biography:
Edgar Degas (1834–1917) was a French Impressionist artist renowned for his mastery of capturing movement, particularly in his depictions of dancers, racehorses, and everyday life. Though associated with the Impressionists, Degas preferred to call himself a realist, as he focused on precise composition and drawing rather than the emphasis on light and color typical of Impressionism. His works, which include paintings, sculptures, and drawings, often portrayed Parisian life, especially ballet dancers, where he skillfully rendered dynamic poses and intimate moments. Degas was also innovative in his use of pastels and mixed media, producing vibrant and texturally rich works. His attention to form, movement, and human psychology made him one of the most important figures in 19th-century art.
