Early Dynastic Period Sumerian Stone Foundation Figure or Votive Statue. Done in the traditional style of the inhabitants of ancient Mesopotamia, with a long beard clutched by the two hands of the figure that stretches down to the ground between his feet. 

Size: 1 1/4 x 1 x 3 1/4 in. 

These figures were placed in temples as stand-ins for worshippers to offer perpetual prayers to deities or were buried beneath the foundations of buildings, often temples, as a ritualistic practice. They typically depict a person with hands clasped in a gesture of reverence and wide, attentive eyes beneath a protective head covering. The figures are made from materials like gypsum, limestone, or alabaster, and the intricate carvings suggest garments and adornments sometimes in cross-hatch patterns.
