Early 19th Century Mahogany Banjo Barometer Signed A. Rivolta. This stunning piece has several different instruments encased in the tall carved form, including a dry-to-damp gauge, a thermometer with intact mercury bulb, the large round weather gauge, and a level at the bottom that reads "A Rivota Warranted," meaning it was likely produced between roughly 1820 and 1845 when Anthony Rivolta produced most of his pieces in London and Chester, England. Comes with instructions for the barometer.

First invented in 1643 by Italian physicist Evangelista Torricelli, the barometer is a scientific instrument used to measure atmospheric pressure. By demonstrating that air possesses mass and exerts weight on the Earth, the mercury barometer revolutionized early physics and definitively proved the existence of a vacuum. Rapid drops in barometric readings typically indicate approaching storm systems, while rising pressure signals clear, stable weather, leading to the first genuine scientifically verifiable attempts to save lives at sea. Beyond meteorological forecasting, barometers also serve a crucial aviation and navigational function as altimeters, since air pressure predictably decreases with higher elevation. In 1843 French scientist Lucien Vidie advanced the technology by inventing the non-liquid aneroid barometer, which uses a flexible metal capsule that expands or contracts with changes in air pressure, and a few years later Vice-Admiral Robert FitzRoy of the English Royal Navy developed the definitive form of the barometer still in use to this day. Whether built as elaborate antique mercury columns in banjo form, as compact brass dials embedded in classic nautical displays, or the more modern digital sensors now found around the globe, the barometer remains an indispensable tool for understanding Earth’s atmosphere, with many antique pieces considered highly collectible.
