Douglass McIlvain was born in Mount Holly, NJ in 1923 and lived in Middletown Township, NJ for most of his life. Doug proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Army Air Corps. during World War II in the Pacific Theater. After the war, he studied art at Temple University where he met his wife Frances. He later received a master's degree from New York University. Doug was a life-long educator who taught high school and college-level art classes at Red Bank Regional High School and Georgian Court University. He was a professional sculptor who created realistic and abstract pieces from wood, stone and bronze. His works have appeared in exhibitions in Europe, as well as the U.S., including at Monmouth University, Lucent Technologies, and the Maritime Industry Museum. He studied under master artisans in Europe at the Tyler School of Art and the Artisans Institute. He published a book comprising a collection of his sculptures and instructional methods titled "Bound Secret." Doug and his wife traveled the world together visiting Italy, France, Morocco, India, Egypt, and China to learn firsthand about other cultures and their art.
