Dorris Xerxes Gordy was born in Aberdeen, Georgia on September 28th, 1913. His father was the well-known potter William Thomas Bellah Gordy, and both he and his brother William Joseph Gordy went on to become famous potters in their own right. Dorris worked for his father until his death in 1955, at which time he began working with his brother at his studio in Cartersville. After a few years he opened his own shop in Primrose, as well as becoming the primary pottery demonstrator at Westville Pottery in Lumpkin for over a decade. His influences were primarily the more utilitarian works his father had made, and he branched out into art pottery much later than his brother. Many of his works are displayed at the Smithsonian Institution, as well as in permanent collections at the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Museum and the Macon Arts Alliance. Gordy died on August 26th, 1994, a little over a year after the passing of his brother.
