Dorothy Moreau Gutfeld (20th Century) Israeli, Silverplate Modernist Menorah. Consists of five descending half-circular arches in successive back-to-front orientation, capped with tubular candleholders.

Dorothy Moreau Gutfeld was an artist in the 20th Century who studied at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Israel. Although little can be gleaned about her life, she apparently worked in metal, crafting modernist versions of menorahs and scrolls. One of her pieces was praised at an exhibition at B’nai B’rith Klutznick National Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C. in 1988. Her “minimalist Bauhaus expression” indicates that she was likely influenced by the tutelage of Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, the metalsmith that Walter Gropius appointed to replace Johannes Itten in the mid 1920s, who codified the balance of form, function, and faith that metal Judaica became known for.
