Donald Carlson was born in 1944 in Oakland, California. While pursuing his Bachelor in Science at California State University, San Jose, he was contemplating shifting his focus to marketing and advertisement, but a chance visit to a glassblowing demonstration led him to his ultimate calling. After graduating in 1966 he established his own glassblowing studio, and since then he has created an estimated 60,000 pieces in a staggering variety of styles, shapes, and sizes. He went on to earn multiple other degrees from CSU, San Francisco, including a Bachelor of Art, a Master of Science, an MBA, and an MFA specifically in glass, all while developing his style and meeting his wife and long-time assistant, Karen. His work is defined by clean lines, well-balanced proportions, and a disciplined approach to color, usually focusing on red hues. Until 2007 Carlson focused primarily on vases, bowls, and lamps, but a studio accident led to the development of his popular cherry series, which introduced a more playful element into his body of work. Donald’s work has been in more than 200 exhibitions worldwide, and is held in permanent collections at The Philadelphia Art Museum, The Chrysler Art Museum, Arizona State University, The Art Commission of San Francisco, The Museum of Glass, The Smithsonian Museum, and the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art. In the 2010s he and his wife moved to a new home studio in Oregon, where they continue to live and work.
