Doel Reed can best be described as one of the "great masters" of American etching. Awards to his talent are too numerous to list: they began with the Gold Medal for aquatint of the Kansas City Art Musuem; first prize for oil at the Tulsa Art Association followed by their Gold Medal in 1936; then came prizes from the Chicago Society of Etchers; Kanas City Art Institute; Seattle Art Museum; Oakland Museum; Southern States Art League and the Library of Congress among the many. A native now of Oklahoma (he is professor of Art at the Oklahoma A. and M. College), Reed is represented with murals, oils, and etchings in the collections of the Honolulu Academy of Fine Arts; Carnegie Institute; Philadelphia Art Museum; Houston Museum of Fine Arts; the Universities of Montana, Tulsa, Grinnell, Texas Tech; State Buildings and many other permanent collections in and out of Oklahoma. Born in 1895 in Indiana, Reed's achievements have won his membership in the Society of American Etchers, Chicago Society of Etchers, Southern States Art League, and, in 1942, he was honored by election to the National Academy of Design.
