DeMatteo Hand-Made Sterling Silver Tea Caddy - 7.940 ozt. Hand made sterling silver tea caddy with pineapple finial. Marked on base.

William Gaitano DeMatteo—often referred to simply as DeMatteo silversmiths—was a master American silversmith renowned for his finely hammered sterling holloware, which gained acclaim in the mid-20th century. Based in Bergenfield, New Jersey, he created handcrafted works such as tea sets, compotes, bowls, and trays, distinguished by their clean lines, refined form, and organic motifs. His pieces, typically marked DEMATTEO STERLING HAND HAMMERED, were so well regarded that during World War II he was commissioned to produce Georg Jensen–style silver for the U.S. market when European imports were cut off. After the war, his son William Lawrence DeMatteo joined the workshop and later became Master Silversmith at Colonial Williamsburg, where he trained artisans and created both historic reproductions and modern presentation pieces. The DeMatteo legacy continued through the Hand & Hammer Silversmiths firm in Virginia, preserving the family’s tradition of craftsmanship and artistry.
