Decourcelle Gourgue was born in 1927 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. His father was a French psychiatrist and his mother was (allegedly) a Haitian voodoo priestess. He became interested in art while attending Saint Louis de Gonzague, and in the early 1940s he took courses at Centre d’Art. His brother, Jacques-Enguerrand, graduated from there in 1947, going on to become one of the most renowned and important Haitian artists of the 20th Century, and Decourcelle studied with him in the 1950s, as well as Raymond D. Joseph. Starting in the early 1960s his work was exhibited at galleries in New York and Port-au-Prince, as well as in collections at Boston University and museums in Europe and the United States. He passed away in 2006, ten years after the death of his more famous younger brother, and his work is considered rare and highly collectible thanks to their association and the relative infrequency with which he painted, sometimes taking years to complete a single canvas.
