De Shootinest Gent'man And Other Tales, Buckingham 1934. This hunting book is titled "De Shootinest Gent'man And Other Tales" by Nash Buckingham, it is a first edition limited to 950 numbered copies, this is #935 of the 950 copies, it was published in New York by the Derrydale Press in 1934, and it is a collection of short stories about hunting in the great outdoors. The book has gilt lettering on the spine and a beautiful paste-down image of ducks in a circular frame inside gilt-ruled borders on the front cover, with the original blue pebbled boards, blank endpapers, the half-title, a black-and-white frontispiece showing the author taking a game bird from a hunting dog's mouth, the title page followed by the limitation page, a page dedicated to the author's wife and parents, a Table of Contents and a List of Illustrations, a four-page Introduction, 240 pages of text, eight black-and-white illustrations, including the frontispiece, and a bookstore stamp from Boston at the bottom of the rear paste-down. Nash Buckingham (1880- 1971) was an American author and conservationist from Tennessee who played football at the University of Tennessee in the early 1900's. He wrote nine books and was considered an authority on waterfowl and upland birds, as well as how to hunt them, and he seemed to have a fondness for ducks and quail. He also received numerous awards for his conservation efforts: he spoke out often and eloquently about the need to enforce game laws and was a staunch advocate of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918, which was passed to protect migratory birds flying between Canada and the United States. The Derrydale Press was an American book publishing company founded in 1927 (and supposedly it got its name from a bottle of whiskey and a map of Ireland). It was an important publisher of outdoor books for North American audiences and the only publishing house in the world devoted to hunting and outdoor sporting books, and it closed its doors in 1942, so it had a short publishing run. The book is 8vo. and measures 9 1/2 x 6 1/4 in. wide, with a tight binding, clean pages and text, and clean illustrations. The spine is a bit faded, with a tad of rubbing on the heel and crown of the spine, and other than that, this limited edition book is in very good condition. #126 #1600
