De Es Schwertberger was born Dieter Schwertberger in 1942 in Gresten, Lower-Austria. His father died during World War II, leaving his mother to raise him and his elder brother alone. He graduated from the Engineering School of Vienna in 1962, and the following year he became a direct pupil of Ernst Fuchs, one of the founders of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism. His first paintings were exhibited in a one man show in Vienna in 1964, and he spent several years developing his style modeled after the Old Masters use of vivid lighting before moving to Solothurn, Switzerland, where he exhibited along with H. R. Giger. In 1972 he adopted his new name, and was frequently known solely as De Es from then on, moving to Richenau to work as an assistant to Ernst Fuchs once again. This was the beginning of his Stone Period, when most of his artwork depicted objects and people made from cracked stone and rocks. In 1974 he published a book that helped disseminate the ideals of the Vienna School, Fundamental Images, which also led him to accept an offer from several galleries to move to New York City and work in SoHo for a year. In 1979 he opened his own Gallery, Studio Planet Earth, before ending the Stone Period with a series of “Time-Portals” paintings. While in New York he came into contact with Alex Grey, whose psychedelic works inspired him to move into a new period throughout the 1980s. In 1986 he returned to Austria, and went through several more periods focused on incorporating nature and wave themes into his art. His Planetarians, large fantastical creatures from his own invented mythology, have been found throughout Central Europe, and today he continues to work from a home studio in Vienna, with permanent displays of his works at the Sinnreich Museum and Gallery.
