David Shanfield was born in 1968 in Ohio. His family moved across the country several times, and he eventually graduated from Worthing High School in Texas with a diverse set of interests, unsure what to pursue in college. After spending a year exploring the Southwest and Pacific Northwest, he chose to focus on sculpture, and was first exposed to crafting hot glass in an elective course at the Columbus College of Art and Design, where he graduated from in 1991. For three years he traveled the country working with various sculptors before winding up at the Tesuque Glassworks in New Mexico. Intrigued by Charlie Miner’s glass castings, he was offered a position with the glassworks after giving Miner advice on improving his technique, and stayed with them until 1999, when he went to work for the famous glass artist Mary Shaffer. After spending several years in Santa Fe, Argentina working with the Art Foundry and as an adjunct professor in the sculpture department of the College of Santa Fe, he returned to New Mexico permanently, where he opened his own studio while continuing to collaborate with artists at Tesuque and the American Glass Studio. Focused on colorful swirling patterns in ornaments, glasses, balloons, and his signature Ancient Series, Shanfield has pieces in private collections across the country and in numerous galleries in New Mexico, primarily represented by Barbara Meikle Fine Art.
