David Schluss was born in 1943 in Tel Aviv, then a part of the British Mandate of Palestine. He grew up in nearby Jaffa, fascinated by the ancient city and the people who came from all over the world to seek refuge there after World War II. As a teen he taught himself to paint, and soon became known for his unique painting style using his hands rather than brushes to create his artwork. Heavily inspired by modern artists like Marc Chagall, Joan Miró, and Fernando Botero, his works often showed dynamic scenes of everyday life filled with joy and positivity in the face of hardship. Using gesso, glue, and egg white to prep his canvases, he would layer black oils and brighter colors, often painting in the streets to properly capture the light and moments he wanted. In the 1980s he moved to Canada in order to study at the École des Beaux-arts de Montréal, and in the early 2000s he established a studio in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Today he continues to paint in his original style, and divides his time between America and Israel, with representation and exhibitions of his work at major galleries all over the world.
