David Roberts (1796-1864) was a prominent Scottish painter known for his detailed and evocative depictions of architectural and landscape subjects. Born in Stockbridge, Edinburgh, Roberts began his career as a scenic painter for theaters before transitioning to fine art. He traveled extensively throughout Europe and the Middle East, capturing the grandeur of places such as Egypt, the Holy Land, and Spain in his works. Roberts’ paintings, particularly his lithographs of Egypt and the Near East, gained widespread acclaim and significantly contributed to Western understanding of these regions during the 19th Century. He became a member of the Royal Academy in 1841, and his legacy endures through his impressive body of work, which continues to be celebrated for its historical significance and artistic mastery.
