Born in Ukiah, California, Darrell McClure showed an interest in cartooning at a very early age, studied in San Francisco and the California School of Fine Arts. At the age of 17, he began his love affair with the sea, taking his first
voyage on the Annie Johnson, destined for Hawaii. At 19 he shipped out for the East Coast aboard the freighter, Artiagas, and worked up and down the coast until friends were instrumental in getting him a job as an apprentice cartoonist with Hearst's King Features. He was with the newspaper for 37 years, 31 were spent drawing the Annie Rooney cartoon.
