Czech Inwald Glassworks Barolac Glass Stampeding Stallions Frosted Vase.

Condition: Commensurate with age.

Size: 8 x 8 x 6 in.

Barolac glass was first produced in Czechoslovakia at the Inwald Glassworks in Prague during the 1930s, primarily for export to England. The ideas for most of the original Barolac designs were contributed by Douglas Jenkins, son of the international glass distributor John Jenkins. Douglas worked with the head designer Rudolf Schrotter and the senior draftsmen at Inwald to prepare drawings for the range of Barolac designs, which were then commissioned as iron molds from various local smithies. Barolac glass came in different colors but was most commonly an opalescent semi-clear or frosted glass, which is why they are frequently confused with French art glass from the same period as they were often unmarked. Designs usually incorporated dynamic scenes to capitalize on the incredible detail achieved by this style of glass, with scenes of nature, pastoral life, and battles the most common. Barolac glass was also imported into the United States by the Weil Company, importers of high quality ceramics and glass who usually added their own labels to pieces, further confusing their origins. As society began to collapse throughout Europe leading up to World War II, Douglas was advised to escape from Czechoslovakia with the molds, but they were much too heavy and he wound up hiding them deep beneath the Inwald factory grounds before fleeing the country in 1939. Many of the original designs and the molds for Barolac glass were rediscovered and used again in the 50s and 60s, and some of them are still being used today. They often have contemporary labels from factories in the Czech Republic, and the molds have been in use for so long that many have deteriorated, polluting the original designs. This means that the crisper the image on the glass or crystal, the older the piece is, and the more highly sought they are by collectors.

Commensurate with age.
