Czech glassmaking can be traced back to the 13th Century AD, and their influence spread throughout Europe in the following centuries. In the beginning the melting of glass was a secret passed on from father to eldest son, so artisan families distinguished themselves by focusing on a specific technique, shape, color, or style. One of the first major contributions of Czech glassmakers was the introduction of blue cobalt glass by the Schurer family in Northern Bohemia in the 16th Century, which became the primary style of most local companies for the next forty years, particularly at the Owl Glassworks near Nedjek. The popularity of the striking cobalt blue glass began to wane after the beginning of the Thirty Years War (1618-1648), although it continues to be produced to this day.
