Curt Schlevogt (1869-1959), born in the United States to Jewish immigrant parents, became a successful entrepreneur and glassmaker after establishing a workshop in Jablonec, Bohemia. There he met the daughter of his partner, Heinrich Hoffmann, and their family became central to the business. His son Henry (born in 1904) joined the company early and later became one of its chief designers. Schlevogt Glassworks gained international acclaim in the 1930s with Art Deco lines such as “Ingrid,” debuting in 1934 and winning a Grand Prix at the 1937 Paris World Exhibition. World War II devastated the company, with Hoffmann dying in a concentration camp and the Schlevogts fleeing. Curt returned to the United States, where he died in Chicago, while Henry eventually escaped to France and built a successful glassware trade in Paris until his death in 1984. Today, the works of both father and son are highly collectible, celebrated as exemplars of 1930s glass design.
