Craig Bone was born in 1955 in Salisbury, Rhodesia (now known as Harare, Zimbabwe). He showed a natural proclivity for art at a young age, and when he was eighteen he served in the Rhodesian Light Infantry as a combat artist. He served alongside his younger brother Andrew, who would also go on to become a famous South African artist after observing his technique and teaching himself to paint, but during the Rhodesian War Craig was severely wounded by a mortar attack. He barely survived, and nearly lost his legs, spending most of his time for the remainder of the war and the following years bedridden and devoted solely to making art. He studied graphic art at Natal University, and along with his brother began to sell his art in support of various conservation organizations and charities. In the early 1990s he moved to the United States, where he became a member of the Safari Club, raising funds in support of veterans injured in the line of duty in modern conflicts. His realistic paintings hang in many embassies as well as the Pentagon, particularly those depicting American soldiers in Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan. He was awarded the Safari Club Medal of Valor and their International Wildlife Artist of the Year Award in 2003. Today he lives in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, represented by numerous galleries on the East Coast and most recently focused on a series of children’s books illustrations.
