Conrad Glenn House was born in 1956 in New Mexico, of Navajo (Diné) and Oneida ancestry. He attended the University of New Mexico, where he obtained his BFA in 1980, before further studying art at the University of Oregon as well as the Pilchuck Glass School. His expressive multimedia work is considered pivotal in redefining 20th Century Native American art, characterized by overlapping figures, intense color, and almost frenzied mixes of animal, plant, and traditional Navajo symbols. His versatile body of ceramics, glass art, paintings, and pastel drawings are in the collection of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, Portland Art Museum, Wheelwright Museum, Heard Museum, Navajo Nation Museum, and numerous other museums and galleries around the world. He passed away in January of 2001, and in 2002 the Heard Museum Guild created the Conrad House Award for the Most Innovative Artist, which has helped further the careers of dozens of other artists including Marilou Schultz, Travis Emerson, Berdine Begay, and many more.
