Original serpentine sculpture by the celebrated second generation Shona artist Colleen Madamombe of Zimbabwe. The sculpture presents a character common to Madamombe's work: a woman with a round face and wearing a billowing, layered dress. Madamombe's themes relate to womanhood, sisterhood, and matrilineage. As is so desired of her work, this sculpture is also a play in surface and texture: her face and hands are polished and smooth, which is juxtaposed with the rough-hewn surfaces of her clothing and hair.
Sculpture is incise-signed in the stone at the back near the base. Size: 9 1/2 x 9 x 12 in.
