This book is titled "Coaching Days And Coaching Ways", by W. Outram Tristram, it was illustrated by Hugh Thomson and Herbert Railton, published in London by Macmillan in 1924 and printed in Suffolk in Great Britain by Richard Gray, and bound by Charles Lauriat in Boston and Bayntun in Bath, England. The book is one of the great coaching books of the late 19th century. Tristram recounts his adventures on the various coach roads of England in the 1800's and his experiences with the different companies, and not a single highwayman did he meet. The book is 3/4 bound, with five raised bands, six gilt-ruled compartments with gilt lettering, gilt hunting ornaments, and "1924" in gilt on the spine, marbled endpapers, marbled boards, "C. E. Lauriat, Boston" and "Bayntun, Binder, Bath. Eng" are stamped on the first blank endpaper, the half-title, a page about Macmillan's locations, then an illustrated frontis titled "The Post-Boys", a tissue guard followed by the title page, a copyright page, one page of Contents, a seven-page List of Illustrations with uncut French-fold pages, 376 pages of text, with 214 line-cut illustrations and some uncut French-fold illustrations in the text, and the top edge is gilt. The first edition was published in 1888, and the author, William Outram Tristram (1859 - 1915), was born in Bombay, India and attended Winchester and Merton College. He wrote novels, plays, and Coaching Days. Hugh Thomson (1860 - 1920) illustrated the book and was joined in the artwork by fellow illustrator Herbert Railton, who shared Thomson's relish for period costumes, coaches and horses. Thomson was an Irish illustrator best known for his pen-and-ink drawings for authors such as Dickens and Jane Austen, Railton (1857 - 1910) was an English artist and leading black-and-white illustrator of books and magazines, and it would seem you needed two illustrators to execute all the drawings in the book. The book is 8vo. and measures 7 5/8 x 5 3/8 in. wide and is in great condition. The binding is tight and the pages and illustrations are very clean, with faint rubbing along the edges and at the crown and heel of the spine and at two tips, and hints of shadows on some page edges and that's it. We found only two copies of this title bound by Bayntun and they go for $125 and $600 each, depending on the extravagance and date of the binding, the Lauriat bindings were a bit lower, and the same title bound by Riviere in 1924 goes for $1850. So if you're interested in the way people got around by horse and coach in the 1800's, and you'd like a copy at an affordable price, this book might interest you, and overall it is a very attractive copy. #102 #1633
