Clover Vail (b. March 29, 1939) is an American abstract artist born in Lausanne, Switzerland, to American parents and raised partly in the United States after her family fled Europe during World War II. She studied at Bennington College and Hunter College, where she engaged deeply with modernist ideas and abstraction, and her career took shape in New York’s vibrant art scene of the 1970s with early exhibitions at AIR Gallery, an important space for women artists. Vail’s work spans drawing, painting, printmaking, and mixed media, often emphasizing line, color, and form in innovative compositions, and has been shown nationally and internationally and acquired by major institutions including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Cleveland Museum of Art. Her contributions to abstraction have been recognized with fellowships and grants such as the MacDowell fellowship and support from the Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation.
