Oscar-Claude Monet was born in Paris on November 14th, 1840, and moved with his family to Le Havre at age five, where poverty and his reputation for a lack of discipline left teachers and parents doubting his future until the young artist Eugène Boudin introduced him to plein-air painting. Rejecting regular courses at the École des Beaux-Arts, he studied instead at the informal Académie Suisse, completed military service in Algiers, and on returning to Paris befriended Renoir, Sisley, and Bazille. After exhibiting at the Salon in 1865, he and these peers became known within a decade as the founding Impressionists. His relationship with Camille Doncieux, who bore him two sons, estranged him from his family, and after her death in 1879 he later married Alice Hoschedé in 1892, creating a blended household of eight children and eventually settling in Giverny. Monet underwent two cataract surgeries in 1923 that partially restored his vision but left lingering distortions, and he continued to paint until his death on December 5th, 1926, plagued by depression and fears of failure despite the immense fame and success he achieved during his lifetime.
