Claude E. Quivey (1871–1943) was an American painter and portrait miniaturist, born April 3, 1871, in Silver Lake, Indiana. By 1900 he was living in San Francisco, where he worked as an artist, and he later moved to Los Angeles, where he spent the remainder of his life and died on February 11, 1943. Quivey specialized in small-scale portraiture, particularly watercolors on ivory, and signed his works “Quivey.” Among his surviving works is a 1908 miniature portrait of L. Frank Baum, author of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Contemporary accounts described Quivey as a noted miniature painter; his daughter, Marvel Quivey, became an actress who appeared in early Hollywood films.
