Christopher Powell was born in 1968 in Pennsylvania. His introduction to art came during a field trip to the Eerie Art Museum, where he was fascinated by a Teco Pottery showcase and began to experiment with sculpture on his own. He took courses at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania starting in 1986, focusing on forms from the early American Art and Crafts Pottery Movement. He explored glaze development, discovering how the right glaze could transform a piece, and honed his throwing skills by working as a production potter after graduation. In 1994 he created his own studio, C. Powell Pottery, in Westerville, Ohio. He also began amassing a large collection of pieces from the late 19th and early 20th Centuries, drawing further inspiration from the works of Artus Van Briggle, William Hentschel, Jens Jensen, and more from Rookwood and other early pottery manufacturers. Art Nouveau and Art Deco also inspired many of his designs incised on classic forms, and he continues to sign and date each of his pieces, giving them all individual attention and personality in homage to the style of the art movements that first captured his imagination.
