Chinese Yuan Style Underglaze Red Dragon Vase. Chinese vase in traditional Yuan style copper red cloud wave with negative space dragon silhouette. Globular body and thin neck on raised pedestal foot. Unmarked.

Yuan dynasty ceramics (1279–1368) mark a transformative period in Chinese pottery, blending native traditions with foreign influences introduced during Mongol rule. This era is especially renowned for the emergence of blue-and-white porcelain, a groundbreaking innovation that combined fine white porcelain bodies with cobalt blue underglaze decoration—materials and techniques partly influenced by Middle Eastern trade. Yuan ceramics often feature bold, dynamic motifs such as dragons, lotus scrolls, and narrative scenes drawn from Chinese literature and folklore. Large vessels like meiping vases and storage jars were common, reflecting both utilitarian needs and the grandeur of imperial taste. The technical and artistic developments of Yuan ceramics laid the foundation for the celebrated porcelain traditions of the Ming and Qing dynasties and played a key role in establishing China’s dominance in the global ceramics trade.
