Chinese underglaze porcelain refers to wares decorated with pigments applied beneath a clear glaze, a technique perfected during the Yuan dynasty (1279–1368) and flourishing in the Ming (1368–1644) and Qing (1644–1911) periods. The most iconic form is blue-and-white porcelain, where cobalt oxide was painted directly onto the unfired body, then covered with glaze and fired at high temperature, producing crisp, durable designs that ranged from floral scrolls to complex narrative scenes. Other underglaze colors, such as copper red, were more difficult to control but prized for their richness. This method allowed decoration to remain protected beneath the glaze, ensuring both vibrancy and longevity, and it became one of China’s most influential ceramic innovations, widely exported and imitated across Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.
