Chinese Soapstone Carving of Seated Guanyin. Carved soapstone figure of a seated deity, possibly Guanyin, positioned before a mandorla and resting on a multi-toned, stylized lotus blossom base.
Size: 8 3/4 x 4 1/2 x 2 in.
Guanyin (often spelled “Kuan-yin” or “Quan Yin”) is the Chinese form of the bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara, revered in Mahayana Buddhism as the embodiment of compassion and mercy. Over time, Guanyin came to be depicted in China as a serene, often feminine figure dressed in flowing white robes, sometimes holding a vase of pure water or a willow branch, symbolizing healing and kindness. Widely worshipped across East Asia, Guanyin is believed to hear the cries of the world and offer protection, comfort, and salvation to those in need, making the figure one of the most beloved deities in Chinese religious and artistic traditions.
