Scholar’s rocks, also known as gongshi, are naturally formed stones prized in Chinese culture for their aesthetic beauty and symbolic meaning, traditionally displayed in scholars’ studios as objects of contemplation and inspiration. Valued since the Tang dynasty (618–907 CE), these rocks are appreciated for qualities such as unusual shape, textured surface, translucency, and resonance when struck. Often resembling mountains, caves, or abstract forms, they were seen as microcosms of the natural world, embodying the Daoist ideals of harmony with nature and the Confucian pursuit of refined taste. Mounted on wooden stands or placed in gardens, scholar’s rocks functioned as catalysts for meditation, poetry, and painting, bridging the natural landscape with intellectual and artistic pursuits.
