Chinese brush pots, known as bitong, are cylindrical containers traditionally used on a scholar’s desk to hold writing brushes for calligraphy and painting. Popular during the Ming and Qing dynasties, they were crafted from a variety of materials including bamboo, porcelain, wood, lacquer, and jade. Many were intricately carved or painted with landscapes, poetry, historical scenes, or symbolic motifs that reflected the refined tastes and intellectual pursuits of the scholar class. Beyond their practical use, brush pots were admired as works of art and became an important element of the traditional Chinese scholar’s studio.
